The term social media is thrown around often these days, without people having an understanding of
just what it is, and how it can help their business. When I've given presentations, people will concentrate
on the question of "have you gotten any business from it", rather than seeing it as another great way to
advertise their businesses. By the way, I can answer that question "yes".
Social media means you have the opportunity to engage people in ways that were and weren't available in the
past. We've had some version of instant messaging and chat rooms for a long time, but you had to go to a
specific place to do it. Nowadays, you can do something like that still, but you can also bring people to
you via options such as what I have on my main page here, called
Meebo. When I'm holding online business hours, people can
drop by and talk to me through that window; that's a great option for business.
There are other methods of using social media to both enhance your online presence and your website. If you
have a blog associated with your website, being hosted on your server, your website will grow on the search
engines because of consistent new and related content. If you have videos on a place such as
YouTube and you link it back to your site in some fashion,
you not only have new content, but there's the possibility of people finding your videos there, enjoying what
you're exhibiting, and coming back to your site. At the very least they might check out your profile there.
You might have audio of some kind, which will do the same thing.
You might decide for something a bit more sedate, like LinkedIn
for business, Facebook for business and pleasure, and
Twitter for the same, although Twitter is infinitely more
live and immediate. Many people don't understand the power of Twitter, while others abuse it. Find a nice mix,
and it can bring great benefits to you.
